Trump operates on two simple rules:
- For me to win, someone else has to lose; and,
- If someone capitulates to my demands, I can still get more.
If you give in to Trump, he will be back. The latest “victim” is Colombia University. They’ve given in to Trump (and Biden) repeatedly, crushing anti-Palestinian protestors, adopting an extreme definition of anti-semitism, kicking multiple students out, executed a partial ban on wearing masks, and are to have security with arrest rights so they can crack down further on students who protest genocide.
The Trump administration is considering placing Columbia University under a consent decree, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal, a dramatic escalation in the federal government’s crackdown on the Ivy League institution…
…The university has already accepted a series of changes demanded by the administration as a precondition for restoring $400m in federal grants and contracts the government suspended last month over allegations that the school failed to protect students from antisemitism on campus.
Needless to say, Trump hasn’t restored that 400 million.
If you give in to Trump without fighting, he assumes that there’s more left on the table. And since you’ve proven you won’t fight, he expects you won’t fight next time. He’ll keep doing this until you do fight, because that tells him how much you really have to give.
Trump’s been going after both Big Law and the Ivies, and so far most, though not all, have given in. Four major “white shoe” law firms have offered 340 million in pro bono work for Trump’s causes and promised not to oppose him.
All of them are idiots. Trump is a bully and a blackmailer. You can never “pay off” a blackmailer. They will always come back to the well for more.
You have only two choices if Trump comes after you:
- If Domestic, fight.
- If foreign, and he’s only threatening, tell him to pound sand and ignore him. If he does something, retaliate.
Trump’s not all powerful. The Supreme Court just ruled 9-0 that he has to return someone they sent to prison in El-Salvador. He’s reaching as far as he can to see how much he can get, that’s all. If you give in, “how much Trump can get” will be as much as he can take. If you fight, he’ll often just go find someone easier to take on and if he does choose to throw down, you stand a good chance of winning because he’s a bully, and at heart he’s a coward. He has no real plan, no real beliefs: there’s nothing he’s willing to go to the wall for except, perhaps, to remove people close to him who fail in their primary duty as a sycophant.
This is especially pathetic in the case of Big Law and Ivies with massive endowments. They can fight and doing so will be good for them in the long run. For law firms it shows that they have guts and no one wants a gutless lawyer. For Ivies it shows that they actually believe all that crap they spew about academic freedom.
Bear in mind that Trump’s power is a fleeting thing. He’s very likely going to lose the House and probably the Senate in 2 years and he’s done in four. There’s a small chance of him managing a coup, and a good chance he’ll try, but his antics are making him noxious not just to the citizenry but to huge chunks of powerful financial and industrial elites. Odds are he’s got his one term, and his health is bad enough that he may not even make that, though I suspect Vance would in many ways be worse.
But, again, if you give in to Trump without a fight, you’re telling there’s more he can get from you.
So fight.
different clue
Yes, Vance will be worse. He is smarter, slyer, slimier and meaner. And he also appears committed to a group of anti-Vatican II Catholic reactionary cultists, as well as supportive of the New Apostolic Reformationaries ( “narzis”) who want to make America into a Gilead Christofascist Theotyranny.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Apostolic_Reformation
(Since Big Silicon wants to turn America into a series of technofeudal fiefdoms ruled over by Silicon Pharaohs, the Christianarzis and Big Silicon will have a big fight over which one rules and which one serves or dies.)
The sooner we can delete Trump one way or another, the sooner we get to “Take a Chance with Vance” and see what that means and feels like.
I too have been impressed with the deceitful cowardice of Big Ivy and Big White Shoe. They thought that appearing to “give in to Trump” would create a credible-looking cover under which to do what they already wanted to do. And they are just now finding out that the Trumpster will always want more. ( And that Vance is hiding behind Trump to achieve the extermination of Big Ivy, Big Land Grant, and Free Academia altogether.)

I too am worried about JD Vance. He’s vicious, intelligent, savvy, and young.

People will fight due to deeply held principles, or for something they emotionally care about.
The Ivy’s et al didn’t cave to authoritarian demands (supporting genocide, forced injections, censorship, etc) because they’re dumb cowards. They caved because they don’t have principles and don’t care about anyone but themselves.
Likewise with the Democratic establishment. Did they fight for a higher minimum wage, No.
Did they fight for bodily anatomy, No they violated it.
Did they fight for free speech, No, they violated it.
What did they fight for? War, genocide, censorship, and pharma profits.
Ian Welsh
No, that’s the thing. The smart move, even if you have ZERO principles, is to fight. You stand a damn good chance of winning and if you don’t fight, Trump will keep coming back for more.
You don’t have to have a single principle, you just have to be tough or smart.
GrimJim
Anyone ever thinking about negotiating with Trump needs to watch The Sopranos.
This is how Trump thinks. This is how Trump works.
He is Tony Soprano, only not quite so smart, and lacking Tony’s respect for the law, morals, ethics, loyalty, and refinement.
Once you cut a deal with Trump, he knows you are weak, and he will work you until you are bled dry.
Perfect example is in the episode “Bust Out,” when Tony and his crew strip a company of every last penny in assets.
Similarly, and even worse, Tony and his crew essentially put Nuovo Vesuvio, the restaurant owned by Tony’s childhood friend, out of business; their solution to the problems they caused by not paying for their food was to burn down the restaurant so the owner could collect the insurance.
This is how Trump operates. If you ever cut a deal with him, he owns you, and he will extract every last penny from you, even unto your death.

The capitulation, it burns.

Yeah, and as dc points out we’ve got the Dark Enlightenment tech bros and sisters with their sinister agendas squaring off against the Christo fascistas and their own toxic agendas. Where does this shit come from?
It’s contrary to every basic human impulse of decency and dignity.
Or maybe I’m just naive and living in a metaphorical sandalwood forest rather than a cesspool, which is where our ‘leadership’ class dwells for damn sure.

“ Trump’s not all powerful. The Supreme Court just ruled 9-0 that he has to return someone they sent to prison in El-Salvador.”
They’re just going to ignore the supreme court’s ruling, and there’s nothing anyone can do about it. ;(

I agree with Oakchair: principles and integrity are missing in action.
It may be a bit like Ian says — as George Burns explained, “The key to success is sincerity. If you can fake that you’ve got it made.”
But, you still have to fake principles in order to use them effectively. These invertebrates cannot even imagine what is absent.
Mark Pontin
Ian W: ‘Odds are he’s got his one term, and his health is bad enough that he may not even make that, though I suspect Vance would in many ways be worse.’
You raise some interesting points. I would differ from you on the odds and here’s why —
Granted, the US is vastly decayed. Still this is a country whose elites in living memory oversaw the assassination of the then-POTUS, his brother the attorney general, and Martin Luther King, as well as between one or two hundred assorted Black Panthers and other resistance members seen as impediments to those elites’ aims.
Going forward, therefore, either we’ll see: —
[A] Trump persist in his wealth-destroying maneuvers, till a ‘medical event,’ say, occurs. Nothing would be easier to explain or arrange — most people have no idea of what’s now possible given the technological advances in targeting specificity in designer pathogens — than an obese, choleric 78-year-old man having a stroke after eating one too many big burgers.
While Vance then becomes president and he’s intelligent enough to be worse, he’s also intelligent enough (unlike his boss) to take the point when, post-medical event, he’s given the Lecture.
[B.] Alternatively, Trump endures in office and persists in his behaviors. In that case, this will be a benchmark that tells us how radically incapable and incompetent US elites have become, compared to the imperial US that once was.
And it will mean the US really has entered an era of weakness comparable to the Yeltsin era in the former Soviet Union.

I’ll second numerous commenters, Trump is just speeding US decline with his Mafia Don games. But there is a bigger context which is the final decline of the US blood-&-soil Universal Imperial project. Thanatos can’t just be forced onto the “Other”, it comes home to roost, like Malcolm X’s chickens, in 1963.
Somebody at Moon of Alabama shared this link, & Mr. Vighi has great insight about EUrope’s suicidal self-destruction urges reflecting fears of the “freedom” from the US, having to act like grown adults (which the subservient European majority is completely incapable following 8 decades of cultural Infantilazation under the Empire’s wings.)
https://thephilosophicalsalon.com/rearmament-the-charade-and-the-game-of-chicken/
A fine excerpt here– “In Hegelian terms, evil is in the eye that perceives evil everywhere around it: we may well descend into barbarism without grasping its underlying causes. After all, the collapse of a civilization is most apparent in its reluctance to engage in self-reflection. And the incompetence of those in power is not an anomaly but the correct image of our historical moment, where Homo economicus falters under the weight of its own rationale. In other words, the structural breakdown of the social contract between labour and capital, which underpins the modern liberal order, can only lead to a rise in institutional cynicism. But, again, there is nothing more ideological today than confusing this cynicism with the root cause of all our troubles. If we merely react with horror to the actions of a psychopathic political elite, we likely do so to distract ourselves from the paralyzing fear of confronting the reasons for the collapse of an entire civilization.”
Indeed, “Honi soit qui mal y pense” goes back to the 14th century, those who cannot psychologically confront (or even acknowledge) their own Shadow (or Other) enter a psychologically free-flowing violent, even homicidal consciousness– something the US Elites have openly and proudly brandished since we “defeated” (sic– they did it to themselves) the USSR.
Do the local ShitLibs oppose endless war and the destruction of the social safety net? I think the majority of us on this site know the answer– here’s a great paragraph from my local ShitLib paper– ”
“Now we throw our Canadian friends and neighbors under the bus. We threaten to abandon the Ukrainians and Europeans and claim we can do business with a career KGB agent and authoritarian who plays Payosa Loco like a harmonica.”
This is from a pro-Mr. Rogers piece,
https://duluthreader.com/articles/2025/04/03/131010-calling-mr-rogers-we-need-you-now
Yeah, I don’t think Fred Rogers would be allying with Banderite Nazis or demanding that the grown “children” from his neighborhood be thrown into WW III. But the Libs can only respond to the raging Id that is Trump with their own equally violent and racist Superego, which they build on a false foundation of “propriety” and “procedure.”
There is a modern equivalent to Fred R. who recently made the news– “Ms. Rachel”. She runs programming for children 1-4 and has 14 million followers on YouTube. So the professional Anti-Semitism Boys who Cry Wolf are whinging that because she deplored the deaths of Palestinian Babies at the hands of the IDF, while also deploring the death of Israeli children, though not at as much link since far fewer Israeli children are targeted and murdered, she is being labelled a “Hamas Supporter” and there are demands that the TrumpCo DoJ “investigate” and censor, possibly jail or deport her. Of course, the likes of “Forrest Johnson” (Fred Rogers’ fan-boy) has never heard of her and wouldn’t defend her in any case.
To Forrest J. the deaths of Russians, like the deaths of Palestinians, are entirely acceptable. It’s only the “blonde and blue-eyed” Ukrainians (including the openly N@zi ones) whose lives have value. The big Dem. rolled-out “Resistance” day last week deliberately refused to mention Palestine (though some Code Pink people snuck in and passed out pro-Palestine flyers) but did demand “Hands Off Nato”, the Endless Wars need to be fought even if they can’t be won, because . . . our investments in Raytheon, Northrup-Grumman, etc. are at least worth saving, & are valued above human life.
The End of Empire is indeed here!! Dig the hole deeper, shovel more lives into it!! We are the good guys, and we prove it by killing constantly and indiscriminately.

If someone capitulates to my demands, I can still get more.” Add to that it is OK for me to lie anytime about anything, because I am creating my own reality here. If anyone thinks this attitude is iconic American manhood, all I can say is that it is no wonder that increasing numbers of American women are uninterested in marriage or sex.
different clue
I read an article recently at NaCap about the recent round of protest displays, including Booker’s performance in the Senate.
Apparently the March 5 protests were indeed called by a Dem Adjacent-at-the-very-least organization. Well . . . that’s the only organization there was with enough “organization” to be able to call bunches of people out to various protest displays.
I noted they instructed people to say ” Hands off (this)! Hands off (that)! Hands off ( the other)!” Why did they instruct people to use the words ” hands off” ? I think maybe they wanted to “left-wash” the protest displays. Why would I think that? Because ” hands off” is a Leftist english phrase. It is not an aMERican english phrase.
An aMERican way to have said it would be ” Stop the steal!” Another aMERican way to say it would be ” Step away from the (this). Step away from the (that). Step away from the (whatever). That’s a phrase that American police sometimes use. It is familiar American english.
I also note that many protestors made their own ad hoc signs. Some were quite original. ( The best protest sign I ever saw said ” I can’t believe I’m still protesting this shit.”) One hopes some of the protest attenders exchanged names and numbers to begin their own organic organization from various little micro-points outward. And will start deciding what to do between protests.
Another thing I noticed in looking at semi-close-up photos of various crowds was the apparent absence or near-absence of Black people. But that is hardly a scientific study. Maybe some more scientific sociologists are analyzing all possible protest crowd photos to see relative presence or absence of Black people from these protests.
It would be interesting if Black America has indeed “sat they black ass down”.

The ‘Supreme Court’ is just passing the buck as it routinely does. The ‘supremes’ aren’t above political posturing/kabuki theater no matter how much it’s been drilled in our heads that they were/are.
It’s a raw power game.
So, if you read just a tad further you will see that the SC ruling also said that they (the Suprme Court) may not ultimately have power over the executive. It evidently left that decision for another day.
How convenient for those in power.
The decision also stated that the lower court should be sure give ‘due deference’ to the power of the executive to run foreign policy = WAGE WAR. Presumably via whatever soft/overt power schemes it sees fit as the courts don’t seem to make any distinction any more.
——
Speaking of kabuki theater, I get a kick out of the games being played vis-a-vis the ‘neocons’ vs the alleged…what shall we call them….’non neo-cons’ (?) who are behind Trump.
What is the definition of ‘neo-con? A Trotskyist turned Ayn Randian?
How about Papa Bush’ answer to Jr when the latter asked the former CIA head what the meaning of neocon is. Bush the elder said that from the perspective of US politics anyway it can easily be deduced to one word: Israel.
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/who-is-steve-witkoff-real-estate-mogul-turned-trump-s-global-negotiator/ar-AA1BWbAG
https://en.globes.co.il/en/article-the-man-behind-the-hostage-deal-breakthrough-1001501623
https://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/steven-witkoff
The history makes clear that Witkoff may well have taken over ‘handling’ Trump after Roy Cohn died in 1986. Trump went from calling Cohn a ridiulous amount of times a day to an alleged chance meeting with the man currently making decisions at the highest level of world affairs.
According to Witkoff:
‘The two met in 1986 when Witkoff was a lawyer and acting for Trump at the law firm where he worked. Witkoff recounts that their friendship began over a sandwich. He met Trump at a deli after working on a deal together. Trump was out of cash, so Witkoff bought him a ham and Swiss cheese sandwich.’
The idea that Trump inspired Witkoff is patently abusrd! Any motivations Witkoff had in life certainly didn’t come from the likes of Donald Trump.
But this is the story we’re supposed to believe.
‘Witkoff clarified on Fox News that the Trump administration had no role in determining the prisoner-to-hostage exchange ratio in the recent Hamas-Israel hostage release and ceasefire agreement.
He announced plans to travel to Israel as part of an inspection team to oversee the ceasefire’s implementation in the Netzarim and Philadelphi corridors, emphasizing that successful execution could lead to additional hostage releases. Witkoff highlighted the ceasefire as a vital step toward Middle East normalization, stating that “everybody,” including Qatar, could be part of future normalization efforts.
Witkoff shared how the 2011 loss of his son deeply connected him to the struggles of Israeli hostage families. He described his role overseeing the ceasefire-for-hostages agreement as “the most worthy thing” he could ever do. While acknowledging the emotional toll of the role might limit his tenure.
Witkoff led a U.S. delegation to Poland to participate in events marking the 80th anniversary of Auschwitz-Birkenau’s liberation on International Holocaust Remembrance Day and met with hostage families. The delegation included notable figures such as Howard Lutnick, Charles Kushner, and Boris Epshteyn.
It was reported that Israeli officials are concerned about the influence of Qatar’s authorities on Witkoff, given his business ties with the country. Despite Israel’s high regard for him and his strong connection to Israel’s security needs, there are fears that his relationship with Qatar could unduly impact his actions.’
Qatar is in no way, shape or form a liability to Israel. This is more kabuki theater/posturing. Witkoff’s first ‘ceasefire’ has been no such thing at all. The fire never ceased. It continues.
Will Steve Witkoff include the Nakba among the genocide displays in the holocaust ostentatiousism museums?
Dad, what is a neocon? One word, son: Israel.
Apocryphal or not, HW’s answer to W most certainly defines Steve Witkoff.

Ian, although I’m veering off the initial topic a bit as I am wont to do I think this is why no one will stand up to Trump.
Despite Israel’s high regard for him and his strong connection to Israel’s security needs
Condoleeza Rice said that the security of the world depends on the security of Israel.
This is the same woman who said in her position as national security advisor in the wake of the 9/11 event that ‘no one could have imagined airplanes flying into buildings’ when military planners have in fact included planes both offensively and defenisvely within military planning parameters for decades!
Imcompetent or lying. I choose the latter.

Where am I going with this? Rice worked with Colin Powell and another man who is currently a part of the circuit, a one Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson. The Colonel is regularly featured on Dialogue Works with the handsome well-mannered/subtly spoken and well-manicured slavic guy Nima who suddenly appeared on the scene somewhat recently as a host.
Colonel Wilkerson is also on Judge Nap who I seem to have a bit more affinity for probably because of his NJ-NYC Italiany demeanor which I grew up around.
Both do a nice job hosting.
Flood the zone. Inform while confusing but ultimately prepare the mind for what’s to come.
———
You’ll remember that Colin Powell went before the UN in 2003 and utterred the words ‘weapons of mass destruction’ about a zillion times thus leading the Israel/Zionist-infiltrated US government of which he was wholly a part to devastate Iraq just as Oded Yinon recommended would be in Israel’s interest all the way back in Feb of 1982.
And please remember that Oded’s ideas certainly weren’t novel in the history of Zionism/Jewish Supremacism.
Yinon’s ‘Zionist Plan For the Middle East’ was published a few months before the Zionist Israeli false flag at the US Marine barracks in what used to be Lebanon but is now greater Israel.
Steven Speilberg of the Bronfman-Bloomberg Mega Group (remember ‘we don’t use mega for that sort of thing’) put out two movies for the plebs to enjoy that summer.
Steve was recently filming here in NJ.
So, the Oded Yinon plan – nothing new in these circles – is eventually adopted into ‘A Clean Break: A New Strategy for Securing the Realm’ in Israel by the same ‘group of insiders’ who led the PNAC ‘Project for a New American Century’ in the US and these same ‘insiders’ were involved at the highest echelons of Bush II in the runup to, during and after the 9/11 event as well as the Iraq war planning which always included the Oded Yinon plan, as outlined famoulsy by General Wesley Clark, former commander of NATO forces in Europe.
It was Clark who said he met a senior military officer in Washington in November 2001 who told him the Bush administration was planning to attack Iraq first before then going on to take out Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Iran, Somalia and Sudan.
The Oded Yinon plan. The Greater Israel Plan.

What is Israel?
I was curious to know if all of Syria is a part of the ‘Eretz Israel’ plan so I decided to ask Zionist google. Its AI answered the following:
‘No, not all of Syria is considered part of Eretz Israel. While Eretz Israel historically included areas that are now part of Syria, specifically the Golan Heights and some surrounding regions, it does not encompass the entire country.
Eretz Israel, in its various interpretations, generally refers to the region including present-day Israel, the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, and parts of Lebanon and Jordan. Some interpretations, particularly within certain Zionist ideologies, extend the borders further, but these are not universally accepted.’
What does universal acceptance have to do with raw power?!
At any rate, one needn’t go digging too far into Zionist google in order to come up with a little more. The first two result, in fact, are rather telling:
‘Boundaries of Eretz Yisrael
Eretz Yisrael is an ambiguously defined geographical area.
The most expansive definition—that of the “promise”— extends from “the river of Egypt” (probably Wadi el-Arish, not the Nile) to the Euphrates. This definition encompasses areas including the State of Israel, the West Bank (Judea and Samaria), the Gaza Strip, eastern Sinai, Lebanon and most of Syria and south-eastern Turkey. Many scholars believe that these boundaries reflect the area controlled—or believed to have been controlled—by Kings David and Solomon.
A ‘minimalist’ definition is “from Dan to Beer-Sheva,” which is a literary phrase appearing often in the bible, referring generally to the majority of Israelite occupied land.
An intermediate definition, known in the Jewish tradition as the “borders for those who made the exodus from Egypt עולי מצרים” describes the areas setteled by the tribes under Joshua. This included the territory from the northern Negev through Lebanon and south-western Syria as well as areas east of the Jordan River down to the middle of the Dead Sea.
A last definition, known as “the area sanctified by those who returned from Bablylonian captivity (at the end of the 5th centure B.C.E.) עולי בבל” under the leadership of Ezra the scribe. This comprises the area south of nahal Keziv (by the village Me’ilia) through the Negev but not down to the Red Sea. East of the Jordan River it included areas from the Golan south to Petra.
The various definitions of the boundaries of the Land of Israel are significant in halakha (Jewish law) and this last definition is the one which is applicable to the “commandments dependant upon the Land” which are discussed below…’
https://rossingcenter.org/judaisms/eretz-israel/
And this, which is the most common thing you’ll see if you dare to look. The kindly rabbi begins by asking a simple question that just so happens to involve an ongoing genoiced although you’d never know it from this relgious/spiritual advisor. The rabbi then goes through all the utterly bizarre Judaic Torah laws and what have you and then finishes up by asking everyone to hope that in fact the prophecy of Syria being a part of Eretz srael is in fact fulfilled. This is sick sick stuff but par for the course in these circles:
‘A couple of months ago, when the onflict between Israel and Lebanon erupted, we published an article titled ‘Is Lebanon Part of Israel’s Promised Territory?’ We discusses how Hashem promised Avraham Avinu the Land of Israel, extending from the River of Egypt (which includes Gaza in the south) to the Euphrates River near Turkey in the north. The Torah delineates Lebanon as part of Israel’s borders. This publication followed a previous article posted more than a year ago, titled ‘Is Gaza a Jewish Land? In light of these discussions and the recent events in Syria, today we wish to explore another related question: What is the status of the land of Syria According to the Torah, is Syria considered Jewish land? The question of whether Syria is part of biblical Israel’s territory is a complex one, rooted in the Torah and historical accounts of the ancient Land of Israel.
Various descriptions of Israel’s borders in the Torah and Tanakh suggest that portions of what is now modern-day Syria overlap with the territories described as part of biblical Israel….
…Let us conclude with the encouraging words of Chazal regarding the end of times before the arrival of Mashiach: The Sifrei states: “In the future, Jerusalem will expand in all directions, and the gates of Jerusalem will extend as far as Damascus” (Sifrei Devarim, 1). May these unfolding events mark the beginning of the fulfillment of those prophecies.’
https://archive.ph/qVUfj
Damascus isn’t all of Syria including parts of Turkey but then ‘the Jews’ are apparently still trying to figure things out among themselves.
I wonder what Steve Witkoff believes?
Anyway, never let a good crisis opportunity go to waste (h/t to Rahm whose brother Ezekial doesn’t think we should live past 75).
